Imaginary Latvian Exchange Student
in the ABC series “Modern Family” (2016), created by Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan
Student #1: Yo, looks like everyone made it. But where’s Vlad?
Student #2: The exchange student from Latvia? I haven’t seen him.
Tammy: I’d love to catch up with that dreamboat. So much has happened since high school. Alcoholism. I tried to find happiness in the bottom of a bottle.
Cameron: A shattering depiction of human suffering.
Mitchell: But enough about how I felt.
Tammy: I just keep remembering how Vlad and I had the best time in high school.
Student #2: For some of us, that was the last best time. Vietnam…
Mitchell: Oof. What time period was all this taking place? It didn’t make any sense.
Tammy: The way things ended with me and Vlad, it still haunts me.
Student #3: A lot of things haunt me. It was the night of the prom.
Mitchell: Car accident…
Cameron: Shh!
Student #3: The roads were very icy.
Mitchell: Car accident…
Cameron: You don’t know.
Student #3: Through the mist, I saw the truck’s headlights. When I came to, the doctor told me we’d been in a horrible — car accident!
Mitchell: Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me.
Cameron: Mitchell, this is the theater. Have some respect. All you have to do is sit there and be quiet.
Student #1: Tammy, you are never gonna believe who’s here.
Tammy: Who?
Student #1: Vlad!
Tammy: Oh, my God, where?
Student #1: Out there. There he is. That’s Vlad.
